Etsy or eBay

Sometimes I thrift things that end up surprising me.  Meaning I come home to research the item and find that it is bringing a pretty penny online!

That's where the struggle begins.  I know I'm not going to put something like that in the booth.  I end up hoarding it.  I think that I'll list it online, and I never do.

Case in point............this vintage Levi's jacket....

I sure did not expect these to be bringing $100 or more!  EEEEK!  Sooooo my question is eBay or Etsy?

I worry about feedback on both sites.  I would go out of my way to describe the vintage condition honestly, along with lots of photos.  You just never know though.

Both sites charge seller fees.  Which is the cheaper option?

Etsy would mean limiting the price, and eBay would allow for potentially higher bids!  But I've heard some horror stories regarding eBay transactions.

My friend Layne has an Etsy shop I love, and I think curating one like she has would be fun!

I'm completely torn.

My stack of things that fall into this category is like the Leaning Tower of Pisa!

Tell me, wise friends, what should I do?  Give me all the advice, please.

And while you're at it, go check out Layne's shop.

  1. They both have pros and cons. I've never sold anything via Etsy and I haven't sold anything via eBay in years. I'd go with whichever has the lower charge for selling. Yes, you can put a firm price on Etsy - but you can also do that on eBay. Yes, there are eBay horror stories, but since they also own PayPal, they're actually REALLY big into protecting both parties - for instance, when I ordered a Xbox 360 a year ago and it arrived smashed, and the seller said he'd refund me if I sent it back and never did, eBay stepped in and made sure I got my refund even though it was beyond their normal period for handling things like that. I honestly think if I were looking for an item like that, I'd probably go on eBay.

    1. You're right! I forgot that you can set "buy it now" prices and do reserves. I truly appreciate your thoughts on this.......as I was leaning toward eBay, you just might've convinced me. Now to check on those fees! THANK YOU!

  3. I have an etsy shop and an ebay account. In my etsy shop I seell mostly vintage home decor items, and want to keep it that way. However, sometimes I come across random things that I know will make a profit, so those go to ebay because I want to keep my shop "catergorized". I've had a positive experience with both, but I prefer etsy because it feels more personal. Great find too!

  4. I've done both and both have pros and cons as the commenters above have said. I think your jacket would do better on Ebay but I could be wrong. I don't like how Etsy's search engine is so clunky and it is difficult to get to the items you want. Some people cross list on both, but that seems like too much work to me. So no real advice from me, just excited for you to do internet sales! Keep us posted on what you decide. :)

    1. I am leaning toward eBay for sure on the jacket. I am afraid of cross listing! I am afraid of shipping! HA! I will keep ya posted!
