Exhibit C: The Walls

Here's what I have:

The problem here is twofold: the wallpaper and the tile. Now don't get me wrong, I know the white tile isn't awful. My previous house had Pepto pink tile, so I realize it could be much, MUCH worse.
But still...........

Okay, I'll just be honest. The tile problem is this: I just don't like it. There are a few cracked pieces, and the grout is a little discolored here and there from age, but overall, it's livable.

What's NOT livable?

Do I even need to ask?

Yep, that wallpaper must go. That is textured, tone-on-tone, circa 1967 wallpaper in yellow and green. Faded yellow and green. And no longer velvety. More like bristly.

Here's what I want:

Check out the lower area of the wall. That is wainscoting. Glorious wainscoting. Also called beadboard. I want that instead of tile. And I want it painted white.

Then above the wainscoting, I simply want paint. The Mr. said, "No more red and absolutely NO wallpaper." So I'm thinking "Rushing Stream" by Valspar is nice.

Also, years ago, I purchased an antique dish in this color family, and my friend Ashley further inspired me by doing a room in her house in a similar shade. My intentions for this dish have always been bathroom related. Think jewelry spot. Or perfume bottles.

Anyway, my vision for this bathroom is clear. What is NOT clear is the when and cost element.

But wait! All hope is not lost!

No, Oprah didn't call. Nor did HGTV shoot me an email begging to redo my bathroom. Instead, my darling friend Nancy alerted me of a local magazine's "Ugly Bathroom Contest." And you can bet your sweet bippy that I'm entering!

Wish me luck!

  1. I do have a pretty sweet bippy!

I can't wait for the results of this contest! I love your written entry and the pictures are absolutely horrific... and I mean that in the nicest of ways, of course.

I LOVE your sample "dream" picture. I like the mirror! I like the paint color choice. It makes me want to walk into your bathroom (when it's finished) and smile. Then I'd take a big, deep breath and turn around in joyful circles. And then I'd break into song... "This bathroom is aliiiive with the sound of gooooooood taaaaaste."

  3. Ooh - I hope you win, too. Is it a "voting" contest or completely up to the editors? The way you write about your bathroom woes and dream project should definitely make you win.

  4. Thanks everyone! The initial submission requests are a 500 character "essay" and only TWO photos. I suppose the editors choose the finalists. IIIFFFF I'm a finalist, it goes to online voting. And you can be SURE I'll post it here AND on FB. And I'll be emailing everyone else!

  5. I want to read your "essay"!!!! I love the paint choice, I must admit, my bedroom makes me feel much more awake in the morning and I would love it in a bathroom as well. However, I believe the orange will have to stay... Oh I am excited for you!
