Be Impressed

I would never, by any stretch of the imagination, call myself thrifty.  Nor would any of my friends or family.  But the more I read about clipping coupons, the more I wanna be that girl.

I do already make homemade laundry detergent, so I figure I'm on the verge of a financial revolution when it comes to grocery store trips.  I even stumbled upon a recipe for dishwasher detergent, which I'm thinking about trying.

Recently, I also started hunting down the Sunday paper and have acquired a nice little stockpile of coupons.  So a few days ago, I decided to hit up the store to see what bargains could be had.  I went with no real goal in mind.  Just use coupons to get cheap stuff.  And I think I did pretty darn good!!  I got all this for just $10.83...........

The Hamburger Helper was on sale for $1.00 a box, and I had a .75 off coupon.  Four boxes ended up being $3.25.

Don't judge me for making Hamburger Helper for dinner.  Or Tuna Helper.  They are both quick and tasty.

So there.

Next came cereal.  I had two .50 coupons.  One for Chex and the other for Total.  Both were already on sale for $2.00 a box.  Pricecutter doubled those coupons, so I ended up with two boxes of cereal for $2.00.  $1.00 each!!!!

The Texas Toast was on sale for $2.50, and I had a doubled forty cent coupon for it......so that was $1.70.

I had coupons for those other items too!  They doubled all the coupons that were fifty cents or less.  So with sales and coupons, I got those nine items for $10.83.

I was feeling pretty smug about that purchase.  But I know there are techniques and tricks to the trade that I've never heard of.  So enlighten me, folks.  Tell me your secrets!!!

And just so you know, my "helper" dinners are for those nights that I'm lazy.

Tonight, however, I tackled our fave tilapia recipe with fresh green beans and new potatoes!

I was pretty much channeling Betty Crocker.

  1. I just started making my own laundry soap in January and three weeks ago began attempting this couponing thing! I like couponmom.com - it pairs up your coupons with sale prices at specific stores. You can sort list differ ways too. Walgreens and Target will take 2 coupons for 1 item - their coupon & a manufacuter coupon. Earlier this week I got deodorant, body wash, and 2 packaging tapes (orig. total was $16.50) for only 26cents!!Sarah was impressed. I'm liking register rewards at walgreens too. Let me know how you like the dishwasher soap - I've been thinking about trying that.

  2. JEALOUS!!!! I have been craving a good deal lately, but my time and efforts have been wasted because of laziness. Oh I sense Sunday night coupon discussions in the near future.

  3. Soooo proud of you! You can buy a cute little coupon organizer on Amazon and you can get it for free once you start using Swag Bucks! There are several people (local too) who print a weekly list of what to buy at Dillions, Price Cutter, Walgreens, CVS with the sales and which coupons to use.

  4. I feel like I don't even know you anymore... Haaaaaaaaaa!

But seriously, what is a doubled coupon, and how do you do it? I'm dead serious. Stupid, and dead serious.

  5. I've recently tried the coupon thing too. {And when I say tried I mean stashing coupons, dreaming of one day getting 50 items for $3 or something crazy like that! ha} I don't really have any good tips just yet, but I did buy a cute little organizer that I'm using to stash my loot... I think it was made for Pokemon cards, but it works great for storing coupons. Plus you can use removable tabs to organize them into categories! :) I found it at WalMart for like 4 bucks.

  6. What do you think of the Chipotle Cheddar? I've been eyeing that for a while now, dreaming of it's yummyness!
Also, I've been wanting to get on the coupon bandwagon. Maybe me, you and Ashley can get together some day so you can give us a coupon tutorial!
